Our Approach

HCDI believes that people have the capacity to change for the better. All individuals, families and communities, particularly women, have the right to participate in decision-making. Our approach is holistic. Our programmes are designed to be innovative and sustainable. We consider felt needs, the environment, cultural context and processes for a long-lasting qualitative change in life.

Presently, we have the following programmes

1.

The Child Focused Community-based Development

This  concept  was conceived by HCDI  when  the first malnutrition deaths at Melghat were reported. The first programme was started in Kshipra, Madhya Pradesh (Holistic Development programme) in 1997 and today, it is the HCDI’s biggest and most successful programme. Seeing the successes at Kshipra, several similar projects were started and today there are 23 such projects covering 20688 families in 272 villages.
Most of these are in remote areas. The broad interventions are education, health, community organization and livelihood systems .Within these interventions, various programmes are undertaken like land leveling and watershed development, introduction of modern agricultural implements, hybrid seed, development of Farmers Groups, Grihini Training, Youth Groups, promotion of herbal medicine, training of dais and village health workers. Our SHGs are very strong in every village and in some places are ready to take over certain ongoing activities / systems. A movement for Self-Rule is also underway. This programme designed with the participation of the target group, is India’s answer to rural / tribal development. Today, we have developed the expertise and are in a position to give consultancy on how communities can be made self-sustaining.

2.
Programmes for Children at High Risk
